Curved Roof Deck Forms Dome for Cathedral

Floline Architectural Systems, LLC crimp curved 7,100 sq. ft. of 1.5″, Type B roof deck as furnished by New Millennium Building Systems to form a dome structure on top of the new Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, NC.

The panels were formed from 22-gauge steel with a galvanized and prime painted gray finish. The dome has a 55 ft diameter at its base, and is curved at a radius of 33 ft.up to the apex. The deck panels were then field covered in copper roofing material. The Cathedral’s dome rises 170 ft above street level. The cathedral is the mother church for the 54-county Diocese of Raleigh.

The project architect was James O’Brien, P.C. of Arlington, VA and the structural engineer was Morrison Engineers of Raleigh. The general contractor was Clancy & Theys Construction Co. of Raleigh. The cathedral is expected to be dedicated in July 2017.
